While the hair loss experienced during telogen effluvium is usually only temporary, and the hair cycle returns to its regular pattern once the physical stress on the body has been removed, more serious mental health issues can sometimes have more lasting effects.  Trichotillomania is a mental disorder that involves recurrent, irresistible urges to pull out hair from the scalp, eyebrows, or other areas of your body, despite trying to stop.  Not only can this compulsion leave patchy bald spots that can cause significant distress, but the repeated damage inflicted on the follicles themselves can permanently impair their ability to produce new hair, a condition similar to scarring alopecia.  While the cause of trichotillomania is unclear, the condition does seem to occur more frequently in those who are also suffering other disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).  Without treatment, symptoms can vary in severity, and may come and go for weeks, months or even years at a time.  Because trichotillomania is not just a bad habit but a diagnosable mental health disorder, it is unlikely to get better without professional treatment from a mental health professional. I have thinning hair and would like to do something to prevent it. I don't really want to use something like minoxidil because of the side effects. In the searching I have done on the internet I was thinking about trying saw palmetto but then I came across something called beta sitosterol. 10.1684/ejd.2010.0828 NHS.UK Computing Services are you much busier than usual? I have been experiencing hair loss for the past few years during the winter months. My hair would fall fall out around the end of October and start to grow back nice and thick around May. I live in NY where is gets cold and dark early. I was tested for thyroid problems, autoimmune diseases and nothing came back abnormal. I was never tested for for low vitamin D. Recently I was tested and found out that my Vitamin D levels were extremely low. The nurse believes this has something to do with my hair falling out during the winter months as it get dark early, limited sunshine and I am dark skinned. So I was prescribed a high dosage of Vitamin D two months ago and will have my levels checked again. Then if it’s okay will take regular vitamin D twice a day. Also I would take 400iu in the winter but wasn’t consistant and wasn’t taking enough. So I hoping this coming winter my hair will not start falling out after being on the right amount of vitamin D and taking it consistantly. I’m praying this is the cause because I don’t know what else it could be since my other tests came out okay and my hair only comes out during the winter. Also I did not wear wool hats, I would wear a silk scarf, bonnet under hats that were not lined.
